Set up variants, pack sizes, and inventory

Use variants for sizes and packs, then connect their quantities to the correct cost and stock behavior.

When to use variants

Use variants when one product has selectable sizes, quantities, flavors, or packs that need separate prices or stock. In the product wizard, enable variants in Pricing, then use Add Variant to create the options.

  1. Give each variant a customer-friendly name such as Single, Half Dozen, or Dozen.
  2. Enter a price and, when stock tracking is enabled, a quantity for each variant.
  3. Keep Available on for options customers can currently buy; turn it off for a temporarily unavailable option without deleting its history.
  4. If Recipes & Costs is attached, set Amount sold in each option. Enter 12 for a dozen; the name alone never changes production quantity.

Inventory choices

For a simple product, inventory can be none or simple. None means unlimited availability until another rule closes ordering. Simple stock uses a quantity and a low-stock threshold. Variant products can track quantities per option. Specific Dates/Drops also support occurrence-level limits, which are separate from global stock.

What customers see

Customers choose among available variants and see each option’s price. A variant can be unavailable while the parent product remains visible. If the selected option has no remaining stock or its occurrence cap is reached, checkout prevents that option from being purchased.

Common problems

  • “Dozen” still costs one recipe unit: set Amount sold in each option to 12 in the formulation editor.
  • Stock appears inconsistent: distinguish global simple or variant stock from a Specific Date/Drop inventory cap.
  • A variant disappeared: check Available and the product’s Display in Shop setting before recreating it.
  • Low-stock alerts do not appear: enable tracking and set a threshold; untracked products are treated as effectively unlimited.
