Turn on tipping
Offer optional preset or custom tips while keeping no tip selected by default.
- Open Checkout Settings.
- Open Payments & tips.
- Enable Enable tipping in checkout.
- Set Preset tip buttons and decide whether to Allow custom tip.
- Keep Preselect no tip enabled when customers should opt in deliberately.
What customers see
Customers see tip choices for supported Square and alternative payment methods. They can choose a preset or enter a custom amount when enabled.
Common problems
- Tips are optional checkout additions, not product discounts.
- A tip fee nudge should explain the merchant’s processing choice rather than imply a tip is required.
- Preview each payment method because method availability is still resolved independently.
