Sell customer subscriptions

Offer recurring physical products with fixed cadences, Square card-on-file billing, and renewal management.

On this page
Plan availability: Scale. Customer Subscriptions require Scale in the active production matrix. This is intentionally stricter than the fallback static feature definition. The active production feature matrix is authoritative if an administrator changes an entitlement.

Prepare a repeatable product

  1. Configure a physical product with a repeatable plan.
  2. Offer a cadence such as weekly, every three weeks, monthly, every two months, or quarterly.
  3. Choose allowed fulfillment types.
  4. Keep subscription products on general/regular availability rather than an availability window.
  5. Confirm Square card-on-file permissions are active.

Manage subscriptions

Open Subscriptions to review active, incomplete, and past-due subscriptions, skip periods, edit standing products/forms, and cancel at period end. Customers start from the product detail page and complete normal Square card checkout.

What customers see

Customers choose one subscription plan, answer product forms, choose an allowed fulfillment method, and authorize a saved Square card. Renewals create ordinary linked orders and send subscription-aware confirmations.

Common problems

  • Subscription checkout is one item only and rejects coupons, loyalty, gift cards, store credit, tips, deposits, manual payments, hosted Square checkout, and wallets.
  • Availability-window products cannot be used for physical subscriptions.
  • Renewal pricing uses the saved subscription discount snapshot rather than current product metadata.
  • Fulfillment validation can move a subscription to past_due without charging the card.
