Set Up Payments
Connect your payment gateway to accept card payments. Square and Stripe are supported in the US; Stripe is recommended in Canada and required in Mexico and on Canada’s Free plan.
Choose your payment gateway
Use Square or Stripe in the US. In Canada, Stripe is available on every plan and Square requires a paid plan. In Mexico, choose Stripe. MXN is the default currency, and domestic Mexican cards require MXN.
Free to start
Provider processing fees apply separately. Cottage’s Free-plan tariff is 1.9% plus the local-currency equivalent of US$0.25; Pro and higher plans have no Cottage payment fee. Review current plan and provider pricing.
Fast deposits
Get paid quickly directly to your bank account.
Secure
PCI compliant. Customer card info is never stored on your server.
How to connect your payment gateway
- 1Go to Settings → Payments in your dashboard
- 2Choose Stripe accounts or, where eligible, Square account
- 3For Stripe, set up a new account with Stripe-hosted onboarding or link an existing account. For Square, choose Connect Square and sign in.
- 4Finish account verification, then choose the account you want to use for new card payments. Connecting an account does not switch your choice automatically.
- 5Confirm card checkout is ready before accepting orders. A linked account may still need verification or payment setup.
Alternate Payment Methods
Where your plan permits, you can enable manual payment options in Settings → Payments:
Cash
Accept cash payments at pickup. Set custom instructions for customers.
Cash App
Let customers pay via Cash App. Enter your $Cashtag for customers to send payment.
Venmo
Accept Venmo payments. Enter your Venmo username.
PayPal
Accept PayPal payments. Enter your PayPal username or phone.
Zelle
Accept Zelle payments. Enter your email or phone number.
Passing Processing Fees to Customers (Pro Plans)
Pro plan feature: You can add checkout fees to offset payment processing costs.
- • Set a global fee percentage or fixed amount
- • Or configure fees per payment method (card, cash, Cash App)
- • Customize the fee label (e.g., "Service Fee", "Processing Fee")
Testing Your Payments
Important: Finish account verification and confirm checkout is ready before sharing your shop.
- • Confirm the environment shown in Settings → Payments matches the store you intend to use.
- • Review checkout methods, fulfillment choices, and any processing fees.
- • Open your public storefront and verify that customers can reach the expected checkout path.
- • Sandbox testing requires a separately configured sandbox environment; there is no dashboard switch between sandbox and production.
Pro Tips
- Account setup first — Follow Stripe or Square’s setup for your business country before accepting cards
- Check the public path — Review the storefront checkout before sending customers to it
